Why 350 possible Chile nature DSC_0542.png

Why 350?

Why 350?

WHAT IS THE RELEVANCE OF ’350’ AND WHAT DOES IT HAVE TO DO WITH RENEWABLE ENERGY?

350 parts per million (ppm) is the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere that a group of leading climate scientist in a 2008 paper set as interim target if "...humanity wishes to preserve a planet similar to that on which civilization developed and to which life on Earth is adapted". Current levels of atmospheric CO2 are already around 400ppm (see latest reading from the Mauna Loa Observatory in the chart below), having exceeded the target around 1990.

To reverse this trend, a concerted effort and policy changes will be required. Renewable energy technologies like solar and wind power will - and in some countries already do - play a key role when we phase out our hydro-carbon based energy supply to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It is 350renewables' ambition to make a positive contribution to this process.
